It seems that tablet PCs are getting all the love these days, as Motorola rolls out Android 3.1 for Xoom and Google designs a search page to better suit a tablet’s screen and touch interface. As the version number indicates, the update for Android is a minor one that mostly adds support for external input devices, improves multitasking and tweaks Xoom’s camera and Wi-Fi system. Complete list of changes as mentioned in the official press release follows after the break.
- Improved multi-tasking providing instant visual access to a larger number of applications
- Resizable home screen widgets for Gmail, Calendar and Browser
- Both keyboard and mouse support, which allows simultaneous input for devices over Bluetooth (in any combination)
- Support for most PC joysticks and gamepads that connect over USB or Bluetooth
- Picture transfer directly from camera, so users can connect their cameras over USB and import their pictures to the Gallery with a single touch
- New high-performance Wi-Fi lock lets applications maintain high-performance Wi-Fi connections even when the device screen is off
- Preloaded Adobe Flash Player, as well as File Manager
In other tablet related news, Google has announced through its Mobile Blog that tablet users will soon find a search page that has been reworked to better suit the devices form-factor and interface. The size of pages, text, buttons and other targets has been increased to suit finger input. Additionally, the image search results page will have image previews, continuous scroll, and faster loading of image thumbnails. These changes will be visible to Android and iPad users over the coming few days as Google has already commenced rolling out them out.
